Friedrich Spielhagen

Friedrich Spielhagen (1829–1911) was a leading German novelist and literary theorist of the 19th century. Born in Magdeburg, he studied law and philosophy before turning to writing. His novels, such as Problematische Naturen (1861) and The Breaking of the Storm (1877), are key works of German realism, exploring social tensions, political upheaval, and individual psychology. Spielhagen also made significant contributions to literary theory with his essay Die Theorie des Romans (1883), where he advocated for objective narration and the "epic law" of the novel. His works were widely read and debated, influencing later realist writers. Though his popularity waned after his death, his theoretical writings remain important for understanding the development of the modern novel.
