Fernando Pessoa

Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon in 1888 and spent much of his childhood in South Africa, where he became fluent in English. Returning to Portugal, he led a quiet life as a commercial translator while producing a vast body of poetry, prose, and criticism. His most innovative contribution to literature is the creation of heteronyms—fully realized alter egos such as Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos—each with distinct philosophies and poetic voices. Pessoa's masterpiece, "The Book of Disquiet," attributed to his semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, is a fragmentary, introspective work exploring identity and alienation. Though he published little during his lifetime, his posthumous recognition has grown immensely, and he is now considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, profoundly influencing modern and postmodern literature.
