Evelyn Underhill

Evelyn Underhill (1875–1941) was a prolific English author and Anglican lay theologian, best known for her writings on Christian mysticism and spirituality. Born in Wolverhampton, she was educated at King's College London and privately. Her major work, "Mysticism" (1911), established her as a leading scholar in the field, blending historical analysis with practical guidance. She later wrote "Practical Mysticism" (1914), a concise manual for everyday spiritual life, and "The Life of the Spirit and the Life of Today" (1922). Underhill also served as a retreat leader and lecturer, influencing both Catholic and Protestant circles. Her literary legacy lies in making mystical theology accessible to a broad audience, emphasizing direct experience of God over doctrinal rigidity. She remains a key figure in 20th-century spiritual literature.
