Ella Cheever Thayer

Ella Cheever Thayer was born in 1849 in Maine and later worked as a telegraph operator, a profession that directly inspired her most famous work. Her novel "Wired Love: A Romance of Dots and Dashes" (1880) is a pioneering work of fiction that uses the telegraph as a central plot device, anticipating later themes of technology-mediated romance. Thayer also wrote plays, including the successful comedy "The Lords of Creation" (1883). Though she published relatively few works, her novel remains a notable early example of how emerging communication technologies were imagined in literature. Thayer died in 1924 in New York City.
