Elizabeth von Arnim

Born Mary Annette Beauchamp in Sydney, Australia, to English parents, Elizabeth von Arnim was raised in England and later married a German aristocrat, Count Henning von Arnim-Schlagenthin. Her first book, "Elizabeth and Her German Garden" (1898), was a humorous, semi-autobiographical account of her life in rural Prussia, establishing her reputation for sharp observation and a love of nature. After her husband's death, she moved to Switzerland and continued writing, producing over twenty novels. Her most celebrated work, "The Enchanted April" (1922), follows four women who escape dreary English weather to a sun-drenched Italian castle, exploring themes of renewal and friendship. Von Arnim's elegant prose and subtle social commentary influenced later writers of domestic fiction, and her works remain in print for their timeless charm and psychological insight.
