Elias Lönnrot

Elias Lönnrot was born on April 9, 1802, in Sammatti, Finland, then part of the Kingdom of Sweden. He studied medicine at the University of Turku and later at the University of Helsinki, earning his medical degree in 1832. While working as a district physician in Kajaani, he embarked on extensive field trips across Finnish and Karelian regions, collecting oral folk poetry and songs. His primary literary achievement is The Kalevala, first published in 1835 (the "Old Kalevala") and expanded in 1849 (the "New Kalevala"), which synthesized these oral traditions into a cohesive epic. Lönnrot also compiled the Finnish-Swedish dictionary and contributed to the development of the Finnish literary language. His work was instrumental in fostering Finnish national identity during the 19th-century Romantic era. The Kalevala has influenced countless artists, composers, and writers worldwide, securing Lönnrot's legacy as a foundational figure in Finnish literature and folklore.
