Edward Whymper

Edward Whymper (1840–1911) was an English wood-engraver, mountaineer, and explorer who became one of the most significant figures in the golden age of alpinism. Initially hired to sketch Alpine peaks, he developed a passion for climbing and achieved the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, a triumph overshadowed by a tragic fall that killed four of his party. His masterpiece, "Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860–69" (1871), combines vivid narrative, technical detail, and illustrations from his own engravings, establishing a new literary genre of adventure writing. Whymper also conducted expeditions to Greenland and the Andes, contributing to cartography and glaciology. His work influenced generations of climbers and nature writers, and his book remains a classic of exploration literature, celebrated for its honesty, drama, and scientific observation.
