Edward Bellamy

Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) was an American writer and social reformer, born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. After studying law and working as a journalist, he turned to fiction. His most famous work, "Looking Backward: 2000-1887" (1888), imagines a future socialist utopia where economic competition has been replaced by a state-run industrial army. The novel became a phenomenal bestseller, inspiring the formation of over 160 "Bellamy Clubs" and the Nationalist Movement dedicated to realizing its ideals. Bellamy followed it with "Equality" (1897), a sequel expanding his vision. Though his literary output was modest, his influence on American political thought was profound, helping to popularize socialist ideas and shaping the Progressive Era's reform agenda. He died of tuberculosis at age 48.
