E. E. Smith

Edward Elmer Smith (1890–1965) was an American food engineer and author who became a foundational figure in science fiction. He earned a PhD in chemistry and worked in the food industry, but his literary legacy rests on his groundbreaking space operas. His first novel, The Skylark of Space (serialized 1928, published in book form 1946), co-written with Lee Hawkins Garby, introduced interstellar travel, super-science, and vast galactic conflicts. Smith followed with the Lensman series (1937–1948), which expanded the genre's scope with concepts like inertialess drives and telepathic lenses. His works influenced later writers such as Isaac Asimov and George Lucas. Though sometimes criticized for flat characterization, Smith's imaginative vision and sense of wonder established the template for modern space opera.
