Dorothy L. Sayers

Dorothy Leigh Sayers was born in Oxford in 1893 and was one of the first women to graduate from Oxford University. She worked as an advertising copywriter before achieving fame with her detective novels featuring Lord Peter Wimsey, beginning with Whose Body? (1923). Her works, including Strong Poison and The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, elevated the detective genre through intricate plotting, literary allusions, and character development. Sayers also translated Dante's Divine Comedy, wrote religious plays, and was a noted Christian apologist. Her legacy endures as a key figure in the Golden Age of detective fiction, influencing later writers with her blend of wit, erudition, and moral seriousness.
