Daphne du Maurier

Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989) was a prolific English author whose works blend romance, mystery, and psychological tension. Born into a prominent literary and theatrical family, she published her first novel, The Loving Spirit, in 1931. Her masterpiece, Rebecca (1938), won the National Book Award and was adapted into an iconic Alfred Hitchcock film. Other notable works include Jamaica Inn (1936), Frenchman's Creek (1941), and the haunting short story collection The Birds and Other Stories (1952), which also inspired a Hitchcock film. Du Maurier’s writing often explores themes of identity, obsession, and the dark undercurrents of domestic life. Despite being sometimes dismissed as a popular novelist, her sophisticated narrative craft and influence on Gothic and suspense fiction have earned her lasting literary recognition.
