Cormac McCarthy

Cormac McCarthy (1933–2023) was an American novelist renowned for his sparse, poetic style and unflinching exploration of human darkness. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he grew up in Tennessee and later lived in the Southwest, regions that deeply influenced his work. His major novels include Blood Meridian (1985), a harrowing Western set on the Texas-Mexico border, and The Road (2006), a post-apocalyptic tale of a father and son. McCarthy also wrote the Border Trilogy (All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, Cities of the Plain) and No Country for Old Men, adapted into an Oscar-winning film. His prose, often lacking punctuation and conventional grammar, evokes a biblical gravity. He won the Pulitzer Prize for The Road and the National Book Award for All the Pretty Horses. McCarthy is considered a towering figure in 20th- and 21st-century American literature, influencing generations with his bleak yet profound vision.
