C. S. Forester

Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, writing as C. S. Forester, was born in Cairo in 1899 and raised in London. After studying medicine briefly, he turned to writing, publishing his first novel in 1924. Forester achieved lasting fame with the Horatio Hornblower series, beginning with The Happy Return (1937), which follows a British naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars. These novels, including A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours, are celebrated for their realistic portrayal of life at sea and Hornblower's complex character. Beyond the series, Forester wrote The African Queen (1935), adapted into a classic film, and The Good Shepherd (1955). His works influenced later writers like Patrick O'Brian and remain staples of historical adventure fiction. Forester died in 1966 in Fullerton, California.
