C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne

Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne (1866–1944) was an English novelist and journalist, born in Bibury, Gloucestershire. Educated at Cambridge, he initially pursued a career in journalism before turning to fiction. Hyne is best remembered for The Lost Continent (1900), a lost-world novel set in the mythical island of Atlantis, which influenced later writers of speculative adventure. He also created the popular character Captain Kettle, a tough, resourceful seaman who appeared in a long-running series of stories and novels. Hyne’s work often combined nautical adventure with elements of fantasy and science fiction, reflecting the imperial and exploratory spirit of his time. Though his reputation has faded, The Lost Continent remains a classic of early lost-race fiction, and his Captain Kettle tales were widely read in their day. Hyne continued writing into the 1930s, leaving a legacy of robust, entertaining adventure literature.
