Barry Goldwater

Barry Goldwater (1909–1998) was an American politician and author who served as a U.S. senator from Arizona and was the Republican nominee for president in 1964. His most influential work, The Conscience of a Conservative (1960), was largely ghostwritten by L. Brent Bozell Jr. but reflected Goldwater’s core beliefs in fiscal restraint, states’ rights, and a strong anti-communist foreign policy. The book sold millions of copies and galvanized a grassroots conservative movement that reshaped the Republican Party. Though Goldwater lost the 1964 election in a landslide, his ideas—particularly on limited government and individual freedom—endured, influencing later leaders such as Ronald Reagan.
