Apsley Cherry-Garrard

Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886–1959) was a British Antarctic explorer and author, most famous for his participation in Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. As the youngest member of the expedition, Cherry-Garrard endured extreme hardships, including a brutal winter journey to collect emperor penguin eggs, which he later described as "the worst journey in the world." His 1922 book of the same name is a masterwork of exploration literature, blending vivid firsthand narrative with profound reflections on human endurance and tragedy. Though he wrote little else, the book's unflinching honesty and literary grace have secured its place as a definitive account of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
