Anna Katharine Green

Anna Katharine Green (1846–1935) was an American author and poet, widely regarded as one of the first writers of detective fiction in the United States. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she published her first novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878), which became an international sensation and established many conventions of the genre, including the use of a professional detective, Ebenezer Gryce. Over her long career, Green wrote more than 40 novels, often featuring strong female characters and legal accuracy drawn from her family’s legal background. Her work influenced contemporaries such as Arthur Conan Doyle and later writers like Agatha Christie. Lost Man’s Lane (1898) is part of her series featuring detective Amelia Butterworth, one of the earliest female sleuths in literature. Green’s contributions to the mystery genre remain significant for their structural innovation and social commentary.
