Anita Loos

Anita Loos (1888–1981) began her career as a child actress and later became one of Hollywood’s first prominent female screenwriters, contributing to silent films and early talkies. Her most famous work, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925), is a satirical novel told through the diary of gold-digger Lorelei Lee, skewering the era’s obsession with wealth and social climbing. The book was an international bestseller, adapted into a Broadway musical and a classic 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe. Loos also wrote the screenplay for The Women (1939) and published several memoirs. Her witty, irreverent voice challenged conventional depictions of women, and she remains a key figure in American literary and cinematic history.
