Alan Hollinghurst

Alan Hollinghurst was born in 1954 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he later taught. He worked as a deputy editor for the Times Literary Supplement before publishing his first novel, The Swimming-Pool Library (1988), a landmark work that intertwined gay culture with social history. His subsequent novels, including The Folding Star (1994) and The Spell (1998), solidified his reputation for lyrical, psychologically acute fiction. Hollinghurst achieved widespread acclaim with The Line of Beauty (2004), which won the Booker Prize and vividly captured the excesses of 1980s Thatcher-era London through the eyes of a gay protagonist. His later works, such as The Stranger's Child (2011) and The Sparsholt Affair (2017), continue to examine themes of desire, memory, and the passage of time. Hollinghurst is widely regarded as one of the finest contemporary stylists in English literature.
