Ada Elizabeth Chesterton

Ada Elizabeth Chesterton (née Jones) was born in 1869 and became a prominent journalist and social reformer in early 20th-century Britain. She is best known for her undercover investigations into the lives of the urban poor, which she published in her landmark work 'In Darkest London' (1926). The book, inspired by her own experiences living in a women's lodging house, revealed the squalid conditions and exploitation faced by destitute women in the capital. Chesterton also wrote for major newspapers and was a tireless advocate for housing reform and women's rights. Her literary legacy lies in her pioneering use of immersive journalism to document social injustice, influencing later investigative writers. She died in 1962.
