Chapter 1
Hunter Quatermain's Story
The chapter introduces Allan Quatermain, Sir Henry Curtis, and Captain Good as they prepare to recount their adventures in Africa. Allan Quatermain tells the story of a lion encounter while stranded alone with his wagon after his oxen stray. He shoots an impala ram, but later a lion kills his ox Kaptein and, along with its mate and cubs, feeds nearby while Quatermain lies frozen on the wagon, terrified but unharmed.

Chapter 4
The Interest on Ten Shillings
Allan Quatermain, having returned to England after discovering King Solomon's mines, finds civilization stifling and longs for the wilderness. He recounts a past adventure at Pilgrims' Rest in the Transvaal, where he invested his savings in a gold claim that turned out to be nearly worked out. After months of fruitless labor, he and his son Harry are down to their last fourteen shillings and ninepence. In a moment of frustration, Quatermain drops a half-sovereign into the claim; while searching for it, they discover a large gold nugget, changing their fortunes.
Chapter 5
What Was Found in the Pool
After a lioness kills Jim-Jim, Quatermain and Harry search for him but find only blood. They discover the lioness sleeping by the pool, and Quatermain shoots her. The chapter also recounts the earlier lion attack, the oxen's illness, and the camp's tense night.
Chapter 6
III: Jim-Jim Is Avenged
After burying Jim-Jim, Quatermain and Harry set a trap for the lioness using a sick ox as bait. During a tense night vigil, two male lions arrive and fight over the wounded lioness. Harry impulsively shoots one, causing the lions to turn on each other. Quatermain eventually shoots the victorious lion, avenging Jim-Jim.
Chapter 7
Magepa the Buck
Allan Quatermain recounts the heroic sacrifice of Magepa the Buck, an old Zulu warrior who, carrying his grandson Sinala on his back, runs a desperate race to the river to escape Zulu assassins. Despite being hunted and fatally wounded, Magepa reaches the riverbank, leaps into the water, and is pulled ashore by Quatermain, ensuring the child's survival before dying.
