Paul de Manerville's marriage to Natalie Evangelista is nearly derailed by a contentious financial settlement negotiation between the families' lawyers, Mathias and Solonet, and Madame Evangelista. The chapter exposes the mercenary calculations behind the marriage contract, as Mathias argues that Madame Evangelista's life interest in her late husband's fortune would leave Paul and his future children financially strapped.
