# Átahsaia, the Cannibal Demon explained — Zuni Folktales

## What happens

Two sisters, daughters of a master-chief, go to wash clothes at a pool despite the younger's fears. The cannibal demon Átahsaia sees them and descends, pretending to be a kind grandfather. He lures them to his cave, but the twin brothers Áhaiyúta and Mátsailéma intervene. After a confrontation, they kill the demon and stuff his skin into an effigy, tricking their grandmother into attacking it. The brothers become morning and evening stars.
