## What happens

The Francis Spaight, a lumber-laden ship, is caught in a severe North Atlantic gale due to the incompetence and cowardice of its crew. The ship capsizes, and the mate and two sailors drown. The survivors, including thirteen men and boys, endure freezing conditions, hunger, and thirst for days. As starvation sets in, the captain and some men decide to draw lots among the four boys to determine who will be killed and eaten. Despite protests from O'Brien and Mahoney, a rigged drawing condemns O'Brien. The cook, Gorman, is forced to kill him, but just as the deed is done, a rescue ship appears, and Gorman descends into maniacal laughter.
