> Chapter companion for We by Yevgeny Zamyatin.

## What happens

D-503 reads a State Journal announcement about the Great Operation, which uses X-rays to eliminate 'fancy' and ensure perfect happiness. He initially rejoices, calling I-330 to share the news, but their meeting turns tense as she challenges his understanding of happiness and forces him to choose between the Operation and her. D-503 realizes he cannot choose happiness without her, leading to a personal crisis. He encounters U- and the Second Builder, and the test flight of the Integral is postponed.

## Key lines

> Rejoice! This Barricade Has Been Blasted at Last! The Road is Open!

Celebrate! The obstacle to perfect happiness has been destroyed, and the path is now clear.

_The State's proclamation about the Great Operation removing the barrier of 'fancy'._

> Happiness... Desires are tortures, are they not? It is clear therefore, that happiness is where there are no longer any desires, not a single desire any more.

Happiness means the absence of desire, because desire causes suffering.

_I-330's philosophical argument that true happiness is a state of zero desire._

> You must choose; the Operation and hundred percent happiness, or...

You have to decide between the Operation that guarantees complete happiness, or something else.

_I-330 presents D-503 with an ultimatum between state-sanctioned happiness and their relationship._
