## What happens

Senator Bird returns home to his family in Ohio, where his wife Mary expresses outrage over a new state law that forbids aiding fugitive slaves. Moved by her story, the Birds defy the law and shelter her, then arrange for her transport to a safe house. The senator drives Eliza through treacherous muddy roads to the home of John Van Trompe, a former slave-owner who freed his slaves and now defiantly protects fugitives. Van Trompe welcomes Eliza and vows to defend her against any slave-catchers.
