## What happens

As night falls, the situation aboard the Chancellor becomes dire. The sailors, upon learning from Ruby's dying cry that the cargo includes picrate of potash, panic and attempt to launch the yawl, but it is smashed against the ship's side by a massive wave. With both longboat and yawl lost, only a small whaleboat remains. The fire rages, cutting off communication between bow and stern. Curtis refuses to give up hope, but the ship is driven by the storm. At half-past eleven, breakers are spotted to starboard; despite Curtis's attempt to steer clear, the ship strikes the ground, the mizzenmast snaps, and the Chancellor is left motionless.
