## What happens

Herbert is shot by convicts at the corral. Pencroff, Cyrus Smith, and Gideon Spilett rush to his aid, kill one attacker, and tend to Herbert's serious wounds. They use cold water compresses and medicinal plants to manage inflammation and fever. Unable to move Herbert to Granite House, they send the dog Top with a message to Neb, who replies that Granite House is safe. Herbert shows signs of recovery, and the colonists plan to hunt down the convicts once Herbert is stable.
