# XXVI: The Dismal Street explained — The Middle of Things

## What happens

Millwaters, a clerk from Carless and Driver's office, is tasked with tailing the so-called Mr. Cave. He follows Cave from Lancaster Gate to the police court, then to Markendale Square, and eventually to Paddington Station. Mr. Perkwite joins the pursuit, and together they track Cave to a surgery at 23 Dismal Street, belonging to Dr. Martincole. While Millwaters waits, Viner also arrives and enters the same surgery. Perkwite grows anxious, but Millwaters advises patience until Mr. Carless, Lord Ellingham, and plainclothes men arrive.
