## What happens

King Karl Gustav of Sweden, growing anxious about the elusive Polish commander Charnyetski, sends Colonel Kanneberg with a thousand elite cavalry across the San River to locate King Yan Kazimir. The Swedish force marches into a trap: Charnyetski's cavalry, led by Volodyovski, ambushes them near Vyelki Ochi. In the ensuing rout, the Swedes are slaughtered almost without mercy. Volodyovski personally defeats Kanneberg in single combat, cutting him down with a masterful sabre stroke. The chapter ends with the Polish forces victorious and the Swedish survivors scattered or dead.
