# Chapter XXXVIII explained — Tao Te Ching

## What happens

This chapter contrasts those who possess the Tao in highest degree, who do not seek to display virtue and thus possess it fully, with those of lower attainment who strive to hold onto virtue and thus lose it. It traces a descending order from the Tao to its attributes, then to benevolence, righteousness, and propriety, the last being a thin form of loyalty and good faith that marks the beginning of disorder. The sage abides by what is solid and essential, rejecting the superficial and flowery.
