## What happens

Volodya returns home for the holidays with his friend Lentilov, who calls himself 'Montehomo, the Hawk's Claw.' The two boys are preoccupied with a secret plan to run away to America to dig for gold, inspired by adventure stories. They whisper over maps, gather supplies, and discuss their journey, while Volodya's sisters Katya and Sonya eavesdrop and discover their scheme. Volodya hesitates out of love for his mother, but Lentilov pressures him. The boys eventually attempt to flee but are stopped in the Arcade while asking for gunpowder. They are brought home, scolded by their father, and Lentilov is taken away by his mother, leaving behind a proud inscription in Katya's book.
