# One Thousand Dollars explained — Short Fiction

> Chapter companion for Short Fiction by O. Henry.

## What happens

Young Robert Gillian inherits exactly one thousand dollars from his wealthy uncle, with the stipulation that he must account for how he spends it. After consulting a friend, a cab driver, and a blind man, he gives the money to his uncle's ward, Miriam Hayden, claiming it is a bequest. He then reports to the lawyers that he lost the money on the races, forfeiting a potential $50,000 inheritance, which instead goes to Miss Hayden.
