## What happens

The Margrave August Michael von Paulsen Quigg, a modern-day Caliph Harun Al Rashid, runs a modest restaurant in Fourth Avenue and spends his nights seeking adventure and aiding the distressed. One evening, he encounters a young man throwing silver coins into a crowd. Quigg leads him to a park and offers his help. The young man explains his predicament: he works in a harness shop for $18 a week, is in love with his boss's daughter Laura, and is competing with coworker Bill Watson for her hand. The boss, old Hildebrant, has set a riddle—'What kind of a hen lays the longest?'—and the winner gets to attend Laura's birthday party. The young man despairs of solving the riddle, and Quigg, despite his good intentions, admits he cannot help with this particular puzzle.
