# The Half-Haunted explained — Short Fiction

## What happens

Judge Pursuivant visits Alvin Scrope's new home, built on the site of the haunted Criley's Mill. They attempt an exorcism against a malevolent Hessian spirit, but the spell requires three recitations. During the second attempt, the spirit manifests and attacks, but vanishes when they retreat. Pursuivant realizes the house is only partially haunted, with the spirit confined to the area of the original mill. Two female ghosts also plead for release, and the final exorcism must be performed in the spirit's den.
