## What happens

Barzai the Wise, a learned man from Ulthar, defies the warnings of villagers and ascends the forbidden peak of Hatheg-Kla with his disciple Atal to behold the gods of earth. As they climb, Barzai's arrogance leads him to ignore the signs of danger, and upon nearing the summit during an eclipse, he encounters not the earth gods but the terrifying 'Other gods' from the outer hells. Barzai is driven mad and plunges into the sky, while Atal survives and descends. The summit is later found to bear a cyclopean symbol, and Barzai is never seen again.
