## What happens

The narrator hears from a doctor about a local shopkeeper, Mr. Skelmersdale, who claims to have been in Fairyland. Intrigued, the narrator befriends Skelmersdale and gradually learns his story: after a quarrel with his fiancée Millie, Skelmersdale fell asleep on Aldington Knoll and woke in Fairyland, where he was greeted by a beautiful Fairy Lady. He spent days with her, enchanted but unable to forget Millie and his earthly plans. Eventually, the Fairy Lady led him to a cavern of gold, kissed him goodbye, and vanished. Skelmersdale, realizing his love for her too late, tried to follow but was held back by gnomes who threw gold at him, taunting 'Fairy love and fairy gold!' He returned to the ordinary world, haunted by regret.
