## What happens

Old Lecacheur, the mayor of Pavigny-le-Gras, discovers that a prized grey rabbit has been stolen from his farm. Suspecting the former laborer Polyte, he calls the police. Inspector Sénateur and Constable Lenient investigate and eventually find Polyte hiding under a bed in a peasant woman's home, along with the stewed rabbit and its skin. Polyte is arrested. Later, the shepherd Severin consults Lecacheur about his wife's infidelity with Polyte, seeking clarification on his rights.
