## What happens

In Copenhagen, she is exoticized by her aunt and uncle and courted by artist Axel Olsen, but she rejects his marriage proposal. Returning to Harlem, she has a brief, intense encounter with Dr. Anderson, then undergoes a religious conversion and marries Reverend Pleasant Green, moving to rural Alabama. Her life deteriorates through repeated childbirths and poverty, leaving her physically and spiritually broken, contemplating escape.
