## What happens

A military unit marching across the prairie takes shelter in a blockhouse during a storm, where they rescue a family with a baby and a kitten. After the family departs, a soldier's alarm about the baby leads to a humorous yet tragic discovery when an Indian attack ends with the kitten killed by arrows instead of the child.

> Each soldier’s heart was grieved sore, For blood it trickled to the floor; So much witl, grief they were smitten, They opened shawl and found dead kitten.

The soldiers were deeply saddened to see blood on the floor, but when they unwrapped the shawl, they discovered the kitten had been killed, not the baby.
