## What happens

Rosemary, having sent Jasper to see after luggage, wanders into a village to find transport to the frontier. After learning that all horses and oxen have been commandeered by the military, she walks along a mountain path and unexpectedly encounters Peter, who is now in Romanian officer's uniform. Peter confesses to being a spy in Romanian pay, having had Philip and Anna arrested, stolen Rosemary's articles, and bought Kis-Imre. Rosemary pleads with him, recalling their past friendship and love, but Peter remains defiant. He kneels, kisses her skirt, says goodbye, and disappears into the woods, leaving Rosemary devastated.
