# III explained — Nightmare Abbey

## What happens

Mr. Glowry returns from London having lost his lawsuit, and finds Scythrop in a tragically sympathetic mood. Their mutual lamentations over the degenerate age are interrupted by the arrival of friends, including the Honourable Mr. Listless and Mr. and Mrs. Hilary, who bring their orphan niece, Marionetta Celestina O'Carroll. Marionetta quickly captivates Scythrop with her beauty and coquetry, but soon turns cold, driving him to retreat to his tower. There, in a dramatic reverie, he is discovered by the real Marionetta, leading to a passionate but absurd exchange. Their romantic moment is shattered when Scythrop, chasing her, collides with Mr. Toobad at the top of a staircase, sending them both tumbling down. Mr. Toobad interprets the accident as proof of the devil's temporary supremacy.
