## What happens

Cressida Fleetwood receives a note from her uncle Paul Fordingbridge asking her to meet him alone at the Blowhole. She evades a plainclothes watcher and goes to the rendezvous, but is ambushed, chloroformed, and kidnapped. She awakens bound and gagged in a room, where Simon Aird and two other men reveal they have abducted her. One of them, a disfigured man claiming to be her cousin Derek Fordingbridge, explains their plan: they want her to marry him so that he can gain control of the inheritance. When she tries to think of escape, Derek threatens her with hydrophobia (rabies) as a means of coercion.
