## What happens

Rand confronts Humphrey Goode about the suicide rumors, revealing Goode's scheme to lower Premix stock prices. A heated family argument erupts in the library. Later, Rand visits Karen Lawrence's antique shop, where he meets Mrs. Jarrett and Dorothy Gresham. He learns that Pierre Jarrett has been arrested for Arnold Rivers's murder, denies involvement, and arranges for lawyer Carter Tipton to defend Pierre. Rand then returns to the Fleming house, times a route from the gunroom to Goode's house, and reconstructs the night of Lane Fleming's death.
