## What happens

A farmer's boy, lost in a dark forest near Cincinnati while searching for cows, follows a bridle path and discovers a dim light emanating from the abandoned and supposedly haunted Breede house. Despite his terror, he peers through a broken window and sees a man seated at a table, seemingly dead. A screech-owl's cry startles the man, who overturns the table and extinguishes the candle, causing the boy to flee in panic.
