## What happens

Geoffrey and Valentine, already bitter from a prior quarrel, accidentally shoot the same hare while hunting, deepening their mutual resentment. As they move through a thick hedge, Geoffrey stumbles and his gun accidentally fires near Valentine, who, enraged and jealous over Margaret, deliberately shoots at Geoffrey. A duel erupts with breechloaders, each firing repeatedly through the undergrowth. When Geoffrey runs out of cartridges and steps out to face his death, Augustus Basset intervenes, striking Valentine's barrel with a briar and diverting the shot.
