# Who is Pip’s mysterious benefactor?

## Answer

Pip’s benefactor is Abel Magwitch, the convict he fed on the marshes as a child — not Miss Havisham. Pip, and the reader with him, is trained to assume Satis House is the source of the fortune. That misreading is the novel’s trap: gentility appears to descend from a ruined bride’s wealth, when it actually rises from a transported man’s gratitude and labor.

The revelation in Chapter XXXIX collapses Pip’s fantasy of Estella as the purpose of his elevation. Magwitch wants a gentleman he can claim; Pip wants a destiny that flatters his shame of the forge. Neither fantasy survives contact. The answer is useful only if it sends readers back to the marsh chapters and forward to Pip’s care for Magwitch at the end — otherwise “plot twist” flattens the moral redesign.
