# Epilogue explained — Golf Stories

## What happens

The narrator and others anxiously await the editor's verdict on a manuscript. The editor approves, saying 'I like it,' and rewards the narrator with a purse of gold before having him thrown out.

> "Well?" we said, anxiously. "I like it," said the editor. "Good egg!" we murmured. The editor pressed a bell, a single ruby set in a fold of the tapestry upon the wall. The majordomo appeared. "Give this man a purse of gold," said the editor, "and throw him out."

We asked nervously for the editor's opinion. He approved, and we expressed relief. He then rang for his servant, who was instructed to reward the author with gold and then eject him.
