# XIII explained — Freckles

## What happens

The Angel races to get help after Freckles is ambushed by Black Jack and his gang. She rides a bicycle through the swamp and gravel roads, crashes, and is found by Duncan. Meanwhile, the Bird Woman holds Black Jack and Wessner at gunpoint until McLean and the Angel arrive. Freckles is freed, but Black Jack escapes into the swamp. The next day, Freckles and McLean visit the recovering Angel, who passionately defends Freckles's faithfulness and insists the stolen logs were abandoned nearby.
