## What happens

Joe Willet, despondent over Dolly Varden, encounters Edward Chester on the road. They ride together to the Warren, where Edward secretly meets Emma Haredale, but is discovered by her uncle, Mr. Haredale, who sternly forbids the relationship. Edward defiantly asserts his love and leaves. Returning to the Maypole, they learn that Sir John Chester has been there all day, causing Edward to hastily depart for London.
